 Itinerary 2
 From Campobasso to  Casacalenda

The Biferno river has always been a determining factor the decisions of the communities that line its course. On its banks cities, castles and churches have been built and destroyed. Campobasso lies upstream of is valley. At the highest part of the town's old centre, at the feet of the Manforte castle, the predominant style is Romanesque with the Churches of San Giorgio (13th C.) and San Bartolomeo (13th C.). Inside the rest of the town, notable importance is held by the Church of Sant' Antonio Abate (14th-16th C.), rich in works of art, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Maggiore (16th-17th C.) and the Convents of the Frati Minori (16th C.) and San Giovanni dei Gelsi (15th C.).

Continuing along the valley of the Biferno, we come across the Church of Santa Maria della Strada, at Matrice (12th C.), where the medieval legends are illustrated on stone. A little higher up, at Petrella Tifernina (Church of San Giorgio Martire - 13th C.), the Romanesque style gives us examples of oriental monsters and hybrid beasts.
