The
region preserves Romanesque churches whose typical characteristics have
remained unchanged through the centuries and others which, although
altered, display some original sculptural or architectural feature. It
is only from the first half of the 12th century that we can
begin to identify examples of this style which will characterise the
local religious buildings right up to the middle of the 13th
century. In the majority
of cases the skilled workers came from territories now belonging to
other regions but in the Middle Ages they formed part of the same
cultural context as the present-day Molise, mainly the bordering areas
of the Abruzzi and Apulia. The hand of the local workers is, on the
other hand, recognisable in evident re-workings of sacred and
allegorical themes. The iconography varies from markedly religious
elements to the portrayal of medieval legends and myths.
