The
Church of Santa Maria di Canneto (Roccavivara – CB - 12th
C.) is one of the Molise’s first examples of Romanesque
architecture. Inside, the ambo (1223) is of notable interest. Just a few
kilometres away, the Crypt of San Casto at Trivento (12th
C.) shows original plant and geometrical sculptural decorations on the
capitals of the mullions. The old part of Campobasso is dominated
by the Romanesque Churches of Saints George and Bartholomew,
(13th C.).

Close
to Campobasso, the Abbey of Santa Maria della Strada outside Matrice
(12th C.) depicts scenes from medieval legends. A few
kilometres further on, at Petrella Tifernina (Church of San
Giorgio Martire – 13th C,) we can admire a series of
religious symbols and hybrid monsters.

Towards
the coastal area the Crypts of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Nicola
(12th C.) at Guglionesi preserve sculptures with plant
decorations and human heads. Elegant palmettes adorn the capitals of the
Crypt of Santa Maria a Mare at Campomarino (12th
C.).
