Abbey |
Founded in the 8th century by the
Benedictine monks, it soon became the most important monastic centre in
Europe. Sacked by the Saracens in the 9th C., it was rebuilt,
well defended by sturdy fortifications. A long campaign of
archaeological excavations has unearthed the rooms of the building and
interesting medieval objects.
