Longobards built the Castle at Pandone of Venafro. Inside it
houses an original collection of frescos. Not far away, the Castle of
Pignatelli di Monteroduni shows the square pile reinforced by
large circular towers.

sturdy castle of Macchiagodena stands above a sheer cliff-face.
In the Matese the fortress of Roccamandolfi was built by the
Longobards. The building has “salami slice” towers.

At
Campobasso the medieval fortress was provided with four large
cylindrical towers by Cola di Monforte in the 15th
century. Along the Biferno, at Castropignano, the fortified
residence of the Evoli paints an evocative picture.
