The
wind of change arrived suddenly in the Kingdom of Naples. The social
differences, the distance between the salons of power and the streets
and alleys, in the light of reason appeared unjustified.

The
intellectuals constructed their own theoretical castle on the basis of
French principles, attempting the course of concrete action with the
Neapolitan Revolution of 1799. The illusion ended in tragedy. The
preservers of the pre-constituted order emerged victors. The present-day
Molise, at the margins of the Kingdom of Naples, in the grip of a
precarious hygiene situation, low rates of schooling and deficiencies of
every sort, was shaken by the events. It produced figures who had broken
with the past and opened their minds to the new paths of science,
politics and art. Vincenzo Cuoco, the Pepe brothers, Andrea
Valiante and the circle of intellectuals who met together in the
literary coenobium of Palazzo Cardone at Castelbottaccio,
the residence of Lady Olimpia Frangipane, are some of the most
prominent figures in the history of the Molise.
