Campobasso
- The Mysteries
|
However, the work which has made Di Zinno immortal in the history of the
art of the Molise and South Italy is that complex and ingenious system
of the living pictures, the Mysteries, devised in 1740. On
machines made from a mysterious metal alloy, they portray scenes from
the lives of some Saints from the Old and New Testaments, with the parts
being acted out by children and people of the city of Campobasso. Each
year, the machines, 13 in number, still parade through the streets of
Campobasso, in the following order: S. Isidor, Mary Magdalene, S.
Antonio Abate, the Immaculate Conception, S. Leonard, S. Rocco, S.
Michael, S. Nicholas, S. Crispin, S. Gennaro, Abraham, The Assumption,
Sacred Heart of Jesus).
