In
the Molise, there are various art forms which, almost by convention, are
grouped under the common denominator of "modern and contemporary
art". In actual fact no single style exists that collects together
several artists. What we find are individual interpretations of reality.
Starting from the works of Marcello Scarano and Arnaldo De
Lisio, the painted picture progressively starts to become deformed. Gino
Marotta creates highly original atmospheres. Walter Genua
several times interprets the sense of passing time that consumes life. Domenico
Fratianni has sought within complex literary characters traces of
the existential dramas of human beings. Antonio
Pettinicchi deserves a separate mention. His
painting seems to be obsessed by the constant presence of death that
hangs over the individual as though over a landscape which appears to be
a hymn to life. We must also mention the notable activity of those
artists of the Molise who have found forms of expression of rare
intensity in the pure experience of colour. Dante Gentile
Lorusso, Paolo Borelli, Ernesto Saquella for example. Of
great interest too is Michelangelo Ianigro's research into the
combination between painting and sound. The intensity of expression of Antonio
Cimino makes a positive impression.
This
brief overview cannot not include a character who accomplished the
greater part of his work in the Molise: Charles Moulin, friend of
Matisse, who left France at the end of the first world war because drawn
by the light of the Mainarde. Of those mountains and of the people who
inhabited them he portrayed everything, living in a modest hut right up
to his death.
